Food Good For the Prostate

There’s no one food that cures or prevents prostate problems, but a diet of fruits, vegetables and whole grains can help keep the gland in good condition. It’s also important to limit fats, especially saturated and trans fats, which are linked to a greater risk of prostate cancer.

Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, such as salmon and tuna, are healthy fats that reduce inflammation and can slow the growth of cancer cells. Other cold-water fish such as sardines and trout are also rich in these oils. Tomatoes are another prostate-friendly source of lycopene, an antioxidant that reduces inflammation and may help slow the development of prostate cancer. Cooking tomatoes, such as in tomato sauce or soup, increases the lycopene content of the food and helps your body absorb it more easily.

Green tea is an excellent source of the flavonoids epigallocatechin-3-gallate and catechins, which reduce inflammation in the prostate and protect against cancer. Studies have shown that men who drink green tea regularly have a lower risk of prostate cancer than those who do not.

Cruciferous vegetables, such as arugula, broccoli, bok choy, cauliflower, collard greens, kale, mustard greens, radish and turnip greens, contain phytochemicals that have been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and prevent oxidative stress. Try to eat at least one serving of these foods per day, along with other prostate-friendly vegetables.

Zinc, vitamin E and lycopene are other nutrients that support the prostate gland. Zinc is an essential nutrient that helps reduce the risk of infection and can help ease the pain and itching that often accompany BPH. Lycopene, an antioxidant that protects cells from damage and may help slow the progression of prostate cancer, is found in red-meat and tomato products, as well as arugula, spinach and other leafy greens.

Although there is no definitive evidence that reducing your intake of red meat, dairy products and fat in general will decrease your risk of prostate cancer, these foods are generally recommended by health experts for their heart-healthy qualities and overall nutritional value. Limiting your consumption of saturated and trans fats, such as those in red meat, cured or fried meats, processed cheese and regular salad dressing, can also help you maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

It’s also important to make sure you are getting enough protein in your diet. Foods that are rich in protein, such as tofu, tempeh, soy milk and edamame beans, are excellent for the prostate. They are also rich in the isoflavones genistein and daidzein, which act like natural estrogens and may help protect against prostate issues.
